The best thing about living near the equator is that there is always a reason to eat ice cream. Fortunately, the Philippines does not lack in cool dessert options. From fruity popsicles to heavenly sundaes, there’s always something for every frozen treat lover out there. If you’re looking for new ways to beat the heat, cool down with these icy options.
| Mochiko Coconut With Mango Mochi It’s a great world we live in when two dessert havens, mochi purveyor Mochiko and Boracay’s famous Coco Mama, collaborate to make one super chill treat. Both enterprises are owned by the same people so it wasn’t really a stretch. This rice cake ball stuffed with coconut ice cream and sweet mango swirls is a tropical paradise for the taste buds. It’s vegan, too! |
Merry Moo Golden Malted Goodness Take a flavor trip back to your childhood with Merry Moo’s delicious throwback. Malted milk ice cream would’ve been a worthy flavor on its own, but this artisan ice cream brand levels up the game with generous speckles of dark chocolate and crunchy almond caramel pralines.
Ambassador’s Ice Cream Golden Milk Gone are the days when carnivores would scoff after hearing the word “vegan.” Healthy desserts have been experiencing some kind of renaissance in recent years. Ambassador’s, for example, has been campaigning for delectable dairy-free ice cream. Among the many sinful flavors, our favorite has got to be the Golden Milk, which is a concoction of creamy coconut milk; spices like cinnamon, turmeric, ginger; and vegan cookie dough bits. Unusual, but also unusually good!
| Geno’s Gabi Ice Cream Ube (purple yam) has been such a perennial favorite flavor of so many people, but gabi (taro) may just knock it off as the king of all root-crop-based ice creams. If you haven’t had Geno’s before, then you’re in for a treat: the texture is wonderfully complex—light but rich at the same time, and made even more interesting with morsels of gabi or ube. It comes in large gallons, which is just fitting as you’ll most likely find yourself digging into it nonstop. |
Manila Creamery Melon Gelat Is there anything that defines summer more than melon? While we can think of a few other options, melon is definitely up there with the best of them. What this local gelataria does is recreate the popular melon milk of the ’90s in an even cooler version.
| The Lost Bread Lily’s Peanut Butter Ice Cream The innovators behind sweet shop The Lost Bread have been known to go a little crazy with their flavors. They’ve recently released a bunch of new must-tries, including hot wings ice cream, but we’re zooming in on this truly Filipino Lily’s Peanut Butter flavor. For the uninitiated, Lily’s is a local brand of peanut butter that’s sweeter and creamier than the average peanut spread. That characteristic sweetness is toned down as ice cream, making it even more delicious. |
Sebastian’s Ice Cream Cakes Ian Carandang has been something of a trailblazer in the local ice cream scene, introducing Filipinos to flavors like blue cheese and mangga’t bagoong. Fun fact: Sebastian’s was the first to come up with a series of ice creams using sticky rice! What we’re loving now, however, is Carandang’s two-for-one ice cream cakes, for the seasoned dessert lover who needs a little something extra. Our current favorite is the Pastillas de Leche, but hold on to your spoons—Sebastian’s will be introducing a new flavor every month! |
